Immokaleans, National Guard head to Afghanistan
Special from the Naples Daily News:
With his 5-year-old son running around his legs, light-up shoes flickering, Robert Mendoza spent a few final moments Monday with his Immokalee firefighter brothers before fading into a group of combat uniform-clad soldiers.
"I'm not nervous or excited," the Florida National Guard sergeant said, days ahead of a deployment to Afghanistan. "The only thing that scares me is a critical emergency happening to my family and not being here."
Mendoza, 37, joined 40 members of the Immokalee-based 856th Quartermaster Support Company for a send-off ceremony Monday.
The unit will head to Fort Dix, N.J., on Thursday for a month of training before a one-year tour of duty in western Afghanistan as a support contingent working on logistics.
