Reflections on the re-dedication of Immokalee's Bethune Center
Special to the Naples Daily News, by Joe Landon of Collier County Public Schools:
What an emotional afternoon it was, a week ago Thursday, as many of us gathered to dedicate the new Bethune Education Center over on South 5th Street in Immokalee.
I just want to share my first-hand reflections. When Claudette Williams sang the original Bethune school song, and the 40-plus returning Bethune students — the alumni — began singing along with her, I was truly moved. It was inspirational. That moment brought a tear to my eye.
To see these former Bethune students, who attended the all-black school in the 1960's, expressing such pride in their heritage and such loyalty to their school really touched me. Not sure there are many places in Florida where "community" means as much as it does in Immokalee. And that moment, on that glorious afternoon, provided one of the best examples of community spirit you may ever find. It was incredible. Wish you could have been there to witness it.
